An Invitation To Adventure

We at Marimed Foundation are proud to offer this unique opportunity to individuals wishing to rediscover those elements of personal character that distinguish true adventurers from the ordinary. This exclusive 6 day voyaging experience is designed for Elderhostlers who seek out new perspectives from which to know their world, themselves, and new communities .

The S.S.V. Makani Olu experience is one of personal challenge and reward. Your voyage is sure to heighten your appreciation of the natural world and the benefits of collective effort.

We invite you to join our professional crew of mariners and make the experience your own !

Sights and Sounds

Seasonal variations in weather and water conditions effect routes and scenery. Winter voyages (Jan.-March) have spectacular whale sightings and beautiful night skies. In the summer months Makani Olu travels to seldom visited locales such as the north shore of Moloka`i, where the worlds tallest sea cliffs can be viewed up close and personal. The crew may even launch the small boats to provide breathtaking runs through sea caves. Sail near Kalaupapa, the remote site where Father Damien once tended to the lepers isolated there. A fishing line is almost always in the water and fresh catch dinners are common rewards.

Itinerary

Independent arrivals between 3-5p.m. to Honolulu ( Aloha Tower). Voyages typically depart Honolulu Harbor the following morning for stops at Moloka`i, Lana`i and Lahaina, on Maui.

Sailing the Hawaiian Islands, receive instruction and practical experience in the operations of a sailing vessel. All participants will handle lines, set and strike sails, and participate in meal preparation and clean up.

All participants stand day and night watches to help sail the ship. Watches last four hours each.

Time, length, and frequency are determined by the number of people on board and the course route. Your level of participation depends on your ability, willingness and choice. The ship is "accessible" if you can keep your balance on a rolling deck and are agile enough to climb a ladder.
